Liangmai council condemns alleged assault on Marenmai chief

KANGPOKPPI, March 29: The Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur (LNC-M) has condemned in the strongest term the alleged physical attack on Marenmai Village chief RK Remping by Taphou Rikhumai village headman Pukho and his men on March 22.

A statement of the LNC president R Machundoubou has also demanded justice for the victim and actions against those involved.

It further added that apart from assaulting the village chief physically, the culprits also abused the villagers in communal tones which could have led to a communal flare up if it was not dealt appropriately.

For which the LNC requested the concerned authority to take prompt action against the culprits. It warned that, failing to address the said incident, the Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur should not be held responsible for any untoward incident related to the case.

The Liangmai apex body has noted that, physical attack on a village chief is a serious crime as per the customary law and the apex body will not take this matter lightly.

It’s been a week since this ugly incident was reported; however, the law enforcing agencies have not taken any action till date, it said.

The LNC has demanded immediate arrest of Pukho and suspend custom officer Thilu Lanamai, alleging that the later had threatened the innocent civilians with his service revolver.

At the same time, the LNC questioned the concerned authority as to why in the world a Customer Officer is involved in a land dispute? And, why is he still left scot free till date even after committing such an offense?, it continued.

It said the village in question is recognized by the Government of Manipur- Vide No.99/6/89 dated 4/1/91, Judgment & order by subordinate Court, Manipur West, case No.175 of 91, 3 ) Court of civil Judge, civil suit No.4 of 1999 and is clearly a Zeliangrong ancestral land.
