IMPHAL, March 9: Students of Thoubal College on Wednesday closed down the Directorate of University and Higher Education, Government of Manipur located at Keishampat against the non-fulfilment of their long demands by the government.
Today at around 12.30 pm, several students of the college came in several vehicles and ransacked the directorate office against the non-fulfilment of their long demands.
The students also locked the office rooms including the director’s room.
Speaking to media persons, Thoubal College Students’ Union secretary Oinam Arjun stressed that the students’ union has been demanding the concern authority to fill up the backlog teachers posts and develop the school infrastructure including campus fencing, proper toilet facilities and swimming pools etc since the past many years.
He said the union has set many deadlines to the concerned authority through the media and memorandums submitted, nevertheless, the government has failed to give any positive response till date.
Arjun said that the union has already initiated agitations including boycotting their classes since March 8 to pressurise the government to immediately translate the demands.
He questioned as to why the government has failed to look into the interest of the students, and pointed out whether it was because the college is located far from the State capital.
Despite being one of the oldest colleges in the State, the authorities have failed to provide proper infrastructure to the college including boundary fencing and separate toilet for boys and girls, he lamented.
He continued as there is no proper boundary fencing, the college campus is frequented by drug users during the night.
Stressing on the backlog teaching and non-teaching posts of the college, he said Thoubal College has only two teachers in the zoology department although it should have atleast 5-6 teachers. He continued the college has only two peons, no librarians, no head clerk and only one lab attendant out of 10 posts.
He also said that two hostels were constructed in the college, but till date the hostels are not working properly.
Meanwhile, police came and opened the locks on the office.
