IMPHAL, April 4: The JAC formed in connection with the suspicious death of N Sopia has demanded the authorities to punish the father and son duo accused Ibomcha Laishram and Laishram Thoiba of Thanga Hameiban Leikai.

Ninthoujam (n) Laishram (o) Sophia, 23 wife of the accused Thoiba was found hanging dead under suspicious condition at Hameiban in Bishnupur district on February 25 around 8.30 pm.

Speaking to media persons at a press conference at the Manipur Press Club today, the co-convenor of the JAC S Premabati said that the JAC has received information that the two accused who were arrested by the police are trying to get bail.

She said if the accused are released on bail before the case is brought to a conclusive end, the JAC along with several other women civil society organisations will launched several agitations.

Claiming that Sopia was murdered and she hadn’t killed herself, Premabati further appealed to the concerned police to charge-sheet the accused for speedy justice in the case.

She said accused in several cases have managed to get bail which is a serious issue as it encourages others to commit a crime. She said releasing accused in heinous crimes before justice is delivered is gross injustice against the victims and their families.

She said there is also an increase in the number of crimes against women in the society.

The deceased Sophia daughter of N Shamjai hails from Thanga Salam Leikai.
