IMPHAL, Aug 11: The CorCom, a conglomerate of several armed organisations, has appealed to all the people to observe Manipur (Kangleipak) Independence Day anniversary on August 14.
A statement issued by the committee asserted that Manipur has a history of being an independent kingdom in Western South East Asia (WESEA) spanning over 2000 years.
Manipur lost its independence after the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.
Manipur remained a British protectorate till 1947, recalled the CorCom.
At the end of the Second World War, many colonised Nations of South East Asia were freed and Manipur too regained its independence.
It was on August 14, 1947 that British Political Agent GP Steward handed over the sovereignty of Manipur to king Bodhachandra.
Subsequently, Manipur drafted its own Constitution and an elected Government was formed.
However, India which had just been freed from British colonial rule called king Bodhachandra to Shillong and the king was forced to sign the Merger Agreement under duress, the CorCom asserted.
Pointing out that August 14 is a very significant day in the history of Manipur, CorCom appealed to all the people to observe Manipur Independence Day anniversary on August 14 this year.
