IMPHAL, Jan 22: Ahead of the much-anticipated 11th State Legislative Assembly election to be held in two phases on March 4 and 8, Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly Th Lokeshwar asserted that Congress party under a system has been working firmly to bring all round development in the hills and valley. He was addressing a women’s political conference organised by Heingang Block Mahila Congress Committee at Laipham Khunou Mitong Lampak today.
Speaking as chief guest, Lokeshwar appealed to the people to ascertain which political party is working according to the pulse of the people and which one is misleading the people by making false promises. He said that it is unbecoming of an ideal political leader to join another party just for his gains after making tall promises to the public while serving in the former party.
Maintaining that people are well aware of the works taken up by N Ratankumar (Kapu), an intending Congress candidate from Heingang Constituency, the Speaker exuded confidence that Ratankumar would bring remarkable changes in the Constituency by working honestly.
An ideal public leader must posess distinctive quality and he should be well qualified, he stated. He fervently appealed to the people to unanimously elect Ratankumar in the ensuing election so that he could get an opportunity to serve the people of Heingang A/C. Saying that there has been frequent visit of Union Ministers to the State since BJP came to power at the Centre, Lokeshwar contended that the Union Ministers preferred to create communal flare up to gain political mileage instead of resolving core issues confronting the State.
He went on to say that giving vote to BJP candidates in the election would prove disastrous.
Referring to the ongoing economic blockade called by United Naga Council (UNC) on the National Highways since November 1 of last year, the Speaker said that the intense sufferings endured by the people due to the blockade could have been avoided had the Central Government promptly initiated effective measures to end the agitation.
MLA of Khurai A/C Ng Bijoy who attended the conference expressed optimism that Congress party would emerge victorious in the coming election. He appealed to the people of Heingang to help the party in forming the next Government like they have done in the past.
Parliamentary Secretary (TA and Hills/IT) Victor Keishing, MLA of Thanga A/C T Mangibabu, MLA of Kakching A/C Y Surchandra, president of Manipur Mahila Congress Committee L Tilotama, N Ratankumar and several office bearers of Heingang Block Mahila Congress Committee were present at the political conference as presidium members. Around 2000 people mostly women participated in the conference.
