IMPHAL: As part of the steps being taken up by government to uproot corruption, a staff of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat has been placed under suspension on Tuesday for allegedly taking money from a patient. The suspended staff – N Romesh Singh works as attendant in Radiodiagnostic department of the state-run hospital. Disclosing details of Romesh’s suspension, officer-in-charge of Anti Corruption Cell S Hemanta told the media that the anti-corruption cell has so far received 522 complaints from different sections of the society. Most of the complaints were filed through the Whatsapp group opened by the cell, 29 complaints received through website of the cell and another 25 in written format. Of the total complaints, the cell selected 141 cases and forwarded them to the departments concerned. The cell has so far received reports for 77 out of 141 cases from the said departments, he informed.
In one of the cases an individual filed a complaint with video evidence showing that Romesh illegally charged Rs 400 each from patients admitted to JNIMS for undergoing ultrasound test. Based on the complaint, the cell forwarded a letter to JNIMS director to investigate the matter. Consequently, JNIMS director Deben Laishram convened a meeting on Tuesday and decided to conduct an inquiry against Romesh after suspending him. The JNIMS director also issued a suspension order against Romesh. Hemanta also said that screening committee of the Anti Corruption Cell led by the chief secretary identifies complaints filed to the cell every month. In the last meeting of the screening committee held on April 29, altogether 15 complaints were approved for investigation. In all 25 complaints will be brought up for discussion in the next meeting of the screening committee scheduled on May 18, he disclosed. Appealing to the public to lodge complaint with video/audio evidence and identity proof, Hemanta said this will help not only in proper investigation but also in taking prompt action against corrupt official/staff.
