IMPHAL May 21: The Government of Manipur, today, observed the “Anti- Terrorism Day” at the conference hall of Manipur Secretariat (South Block). The observation which coincides with the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated on May21, 1991 at Sreepurembador, Tamil Nadu is held as a mark against terrorism every year.
Th. Devendro Singh, minister, Revenue, Law & Legislative Affairs and Forest & Environment graced the function as the chief guest. T.N. Hoakip, Minister Public Health Engineering, IPR & Tourism, D.D. Thaisii, Minister, Youth Affairs and Sport and other high ranking officials of the government were also present in the function.
Th. Devendro Singh in his speech, as the chief guest of the function said “as the anti- terrorism day approached, it is vividly evident that disunity and fragmentation of society brings hardship to all of us”, he said that terrorist activities brings miseries and untold hardships to the people”. He further added that “arm conflicts bring no solution, however, treaty does”.
During the observation a pledge was also taken on anti- terrorism led by the chief guest of the function“The Anti- Terrorism Day” was also observed at Congress Bhavan, today, organized jointly by the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee and Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee. During the function floral tribute was paid to the late Rajiv Gandhi. The procession was led by Gaikhangam, president, MPCC.
In the mean time, a blood donation camp was also held in connection with the observation. The camp was organized in collaboration with JNIMS & RIMS, Imphal.
M. Prithiviraj, president, MPYCC, in his speech said that “the blood donation camp was held in connection with Anti- Terrorism Day”.He added that the donation of blood side by side with the observation of Anti Terrorism Day is held every year all across the ountry“. He further added that the organizers have set a target of 500 donors from each state of the country, however, in Manipur around 460 donors turned up during the camp.
Gaikhangam, president, MPCC, also spoke during the function reminiscing on the achievements and contributions of the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi.
In connection with the observation of Anti- Terrorism Day, a campaign on Anti Terrorism was also organized by John Bosco, Imphal Public and Temple of learning school. The campaign comprises of school going children and teaching staff. The objective of the Campaign was to wean away the youth from the terrorist violence cult by highlighting the sufferings of common people and showing how it is prejudicial to the state & national interest.
It was on this day in 1991 that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi fell to the design of the terrorists. The day is observed to generate awareness in the country among all sections of people, about the danger of terrorism, violence and its dangerous effects on people, the society and the country as whole.The Campaign had a profound impact on the outlook of the participants towards advancement of the society.
