IMPHAL, September 18: The 39th Foundation Day of the All Manipur Working Journalists Union was observed at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul on Sunday.
The observation was attended by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi as the Chief Guest and works minister Kh Ratankumar as the guest of honor, AMWJU president Ahongsangbam Mobi presided over the function.
As part of the observance, many veteran journalist K Madhumangol, N Sarat, Rk Ranendrajit, Dinamani Haoba, Ak Sanaton, L Iboyaima and N Tombiraj were felicitated.
Speaking at the function, Resident Editor of IFP, Irengbam Arun highlighted the predicaments faced by the state media at present. He mentioned that the salary paid to the scribes is not commensurate and there should be some corrective measures taken up regardingly.
He stated further that the Government also needs to provide certain provisions to the scribes body in the ways of giving proper ownership of the land for the Manipur Press Club at Majorkhul and also aid in funds for the pension benefits of the journalists.
Work minister Kh Ratankumar mentioned in his speech that the scribes of the state are vexed with the issues of ethical news reporting as certain dictates has been pressurized on the media. It was mentioned that the workings of an independent media are hindered due to the law and order situation.
In a similar tone, the Chief Minister also promised to provide adequate facilities for the scribes. He however stated that the files cannot be moved in the Government departments without follow up and urged the scribe body to tender their grievances so as the matter can be taken up for redressal.
