Need to organized cultural workshops outside Imphal, say cultural exponents

MOREH, December 8: A five day workshop on Manipuri Nata Sankirtan was inaugurated today at the ground of the Ima Kondong Lairembi, Moreh today.

The workshop has been organized by the department of Art & Culture, Meitei Council Moreh, and Cultural Research Academy Moreh, CRAM.

Several of the invitees and attending cultural exponents expressed the need to organized such cultural workshops outside the Imphal area during the function.

The inaugural function was attended by Forum for Laboratory Theatre of Manipur, president Dr Lokendra Arambam as chief guest, Joint Director Art and Culture S Bheigya Singh as functional president and MCM president M Thoiba and A Chitreshwar Sharma as guests of honour.

The main objective of the workshop is to preserve the culture and tradition of the Meiteis and so as to encourage the youth towards the age old Meitei culture and traditions.

Speaking during the inaugural function, the invitees expressed their opinions on the need to encourage and organize such workshops more at places outside of the state capital Imphal where meiteis inhabit.

The invitees also spoke on the importance of Nata Sankirtan and indigenous pung chollom in today’s society.

A Chitreshwar Sharma, Elangbam Chaobhal Singh, Moirangthem Meinya Singh, Thokchom Pousha Meitei and Mayanglambam Brojen Singh spoke at the inaugural function as resource persons.

The function was also attended by Meitei traditional drummers and other cultural exponents from Moreh and Ningthi village of Myanmar along with others.

Other highlights of the function include dance shows from cultural troupes of Thadou Kuki and Zou tribes.
