NERCOMP Phase-II project improves the lot of Senapati citizens

IMPHAL, December 11: The North Eastern Region Community Resources Management Project for Upland Areas NERCORMP-II) project was taken up to improve the livelihood options of economically vulnerable groups in a sustainable manner through the promotion of improved livelihood opportunities and strengthening of local institutions that relate to livelihood development, stated Senapati NERCORMP project manager N Sukerjit during an inspection tour of S-Leijang, Bungte Khulen and Sadu Chiru at Senapati District today.

After the NERCORMP-I project was successful conducted during 2000-2008, the NERCOMP-II project was initiated in 2010. NERCORMP is a joint initiative of the Union government and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialized agency of the United Nation Headquartered in Rome. The North Eastern Council (NEC) under the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region (DONER) represents the government in this joint initiative, he said highlighting the aim of the project was to take a new approach to development focussing on interventions which are technically appropriate, culturally sensitive and institutionally effective.

The project is meant for promoting a more sensitive approach to the design and implementation of development interventions, he said adding which is to enhance the capabilities of local people to select appropriate livelihood opportunities, access required financial resources and manage new technologies and institutions at the village level.

The project also intends to increase income through more sustainable income generating rural livelihood activities and the establishment of more and more non-farm enterprises at the micro and small scale level, he said.

This project on capacity Building of communities focuses on economic livelihood activities involving organic agriculture, shifting cultivation, livestock, animal husbandry, fishery etc while also including village road development and electrification, he said, adding the project is aiming for the upliftment of rural areas by 2016.

Meanwhile, the villagers informed media persons that with the launch of this project, many developments are taking place which is most apparent in the way in which the transport system has developed.
