Former minister Haokholal Thangjom dies at 85


IMPHAL, June 18: Former minister and social leader Haokholal Thangjom expired this morning around 8:30 am at his Old Lambulane residence. He was 85.

The deceased is survived by his wife, 2 sons and four daughters.

He was first elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Manipur in 1972 as Congress candidate from Churachandpur Assembly constituency and elected as the chief whip of the CLP. He was reelected for the second time in the mid term elections in 1974 and became a cabinet minister with health department port-folio and subsequently cabinet in-charge of development and there after became cabinet minister in charge of Food and Civil Supplies, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry and co-operation.

Late Haokholal Thangjom is also a prominent figure in social work, and was among those who pioneered various issues of the minority tribal and took active role in putting an end to the communal conflict between the Kukis and the Zomis.

Besides his political mileage and social works the former minister also holds key post of non government and government bodies.

It has been informed that he also initiated the “Resumption of Assam Mizo Peace Talks” at political level, with the blessing of late Indira Gandhi (former Prime Minister of India) in the end of January 1980. The talks resumed on the ‘anvil’ of his “Point Five Formula”, between the Central Government and late Laldenga, the then president of the Mizo National Front.

The late minister was born on October 24, 1926 at Tamenglong headquarters and is the eldest son of Late Tawngpau Thangjom (father) and Late Deikhokim Thangjom (mother).

The Mizo Students’ Association, HQ Manipur expressed its shock on the sudden demise of late Haokholal Thangzom, ex.MLA-Minister.

A statement of the Mizo Zirlai Pawl/Mizo Students’ Association, released by Kimlou Gangte, said that the late minister was a Patron Mizo Students Association, hqtrs. Manipur.

It shared the pain and lost with the bereaved family and prayed for his soul to rest in peace.
