Land dispute leaves woman with bullet injury; accused absconding


IMPHAL, December 12: A woman was today shot at her left thigh following a land dispute this morning at Sagolband Bijoy Govinda Mamang Leikai under Imphal police station.

The victim has been identified as RK Thabaton Devi, 40, d/o (l) RK Modhusudan and is currently admitted at the RIMS.

The accused identified as Rk. Naocha 25, s/o RK Pishak of Sagolband  Bijoy Govinda is said to be absconding since the incident.

According to victim family, the family had mortgaged a land to one Meihoubam Kiranmala Devi of Sagolband Mantri Leikai some five to six years back. The family owing to some financial difficulties have been unable to pay back the mortgage.

They further stated that some few days back, Kiranmala alongwith the accused who is her neighbour had come to the victim’s family to talk on the land issue.

However after some two days, the accused came again and left a bullet and a letter stating that the land dispute should be settled in ten days time and in case of failure, the family should bear all consequences.

The accused Inaoba came this morning at around 7am and threatened the family that the deadline ended yesterday at which one of the angered brother had a physical fight with Inaoba. Inaoba then left their house, the family further informed media persons.

He came again with a hand gun, and fired a shot which missed at which the brothers of the victim tried to overpower him, however he shot again which hit the victim on her left thigh, the family further informed.

As Thabaton was hurt, her brothers turned their attention to her and taking the chance, Inaoba fled from the scene, they further added.

Meanwhile angered locals dismantled Inaoba’s house this afternoon.

Imphal west police has further picked up Kiranmala and mother of Inaoba, Purnimashi for interrogation and filed a case regarding the incident.
