JAC warns bandh from May 2

IMPHAL, April 29: The JAC formed in connection with the disappearance of Takhellambam Rahul called a press conference at the Manipur Press Club today decrying police action this morning which left four individuals injured and further set new deadlines for the government and school authorities to find the missing student.

Four protestors were injured when police fired tear gas shells and lathi charged at a group of protestors imposing a bandh along the Tiddim road at Khwairakpam area this afternoon at 12:30pm.

The missing boy’s elder sister T Ashmita, 18 was amongst the injured.

Speaking to media persons, JAC spokesperson, Khungdongbam Nabachandra said the government and the school authorities should find and produce T Rahul who has been missing since April 21 by April 30.

He added that in case the government fail to do so, the JAC is all set to impose a 42 hour state-wide general strike from May 2 morning 6am.

Deliberating on the issue, he stated that Rahul’s family was informed of his disappearance at 6pm of April 21, since then the JAC formed in the connection had been organizing several sit ins, agitations, public meetings in collaboration with locals and other like-minded clubs and organizations.

The JAC had submitted a memorandum to both the Chief Minister and the Home Minister setting April 28 as deadline for the authorities to find the student, he said.

The JAC along with family members also staged a sit in protest on April 27 alongwith school authorities wherein it was resolved the setting of April 28 deadline.

While expressing the JAC’s and family members’ displeasure, he informed it to be unfortunate that the government and the school authorities have failed to find the school student.

Further elaborating on the JACs line of action, he said the JAC members will stage a mass court arrest on April 30.

The mass court arrest will be followed by a 42 hour state wide general strike from 6am of May 2, he informed before expressing his strong believe that educational institutions, local clubs, meira paibis and other like-minded organizations will garner support to the JACs protest.

Meanwhile, elaborating on today’s incident, the spokesperson said JAC members and supporters were imposing a general strike at Khwairakpam when police arrived and fired tear gas shells and lathi-charged the gathered members leaving four including Rahul’s sister injured.

The three others have been identified as Pukhrambam Lakher, 32 wife of Inaobi of Naikhong Khullen, Takhellambam Thaja, 50 wife of Merajao of Ngaikhong Khullen, Laishram Amravati, 36 wife of Bimol of Ngaikhong Siphai.
