Shoddy investigation in James case decried

IMPHAL, May 16: Zeliangrong Students Union Delhi, ZSUD and Zeliangrong Welfare Association Delhi ZWAD have urged the Meghalaya government to expedite the case regarding the death of a Zeliangrong researcher near NEHU campus on March 17.

A joint statement of the two bodies has strongly condemned the alleged coldblooded murder of one James Todiuwang a Zeliangrong Research Scholar by unknown miscreants near NEHU campus on March 17, 2012.

It has further condemned the shoddy investigation by the local police which cannot even arrest the involved culprits even after more than a month of the gruesome crime.

It has further expressed that while James Todiuwang, a Ph D student of NEHU was allegedly killed in a motor bike accident on March 17, 2012, near gates No 2 and 3 of the NEHU Campus, Shillong, the prima facie evidences such as the post mortem report, the report on the condition of the bike involved in the alleged accident as provided by the District Transport Officer and many other suggest that James Todiuwang’s death is a clear case of murder.

Moreover, the peculiar injury marks on James Todiuwang body strongly indicate that the accident was not the primary cause of his death, but was caused by brutal physical assaults, if further alleged.

“We are appalled at the apathy, the deliberate silence and inaction on the part of the local authority for grossly failing to act in the case, even as Chief Minister of Meghalaya Mukul Sangma vigorously campaign to seek justice for the untimely death of Dana Sangma, his own niece in Gurgaon” it stated and added that a similar treatment from the Chief Minister in the case of James Todiwang is expected.

It has further appealed to the Government of Meghalaya to expedite the case by setting up an independent judicial enquiry so that justice is provided to James Todiuwang and his bereaved family.

The unions have also appealed to the Manipur Chief Minister and Home Minister to talk to their counterparts in the Government of Meghalaya to take up the case seriously so that justice is delivered to the victim at the earliest, such unfortunate incidents do not occur again in the future and the good relations, mutual trust and understanding between the locals and people from other parts of North East in Shillong are enhanced, the statement ended.
