Street plays on domestic workers


    IMPHAL, July 3: The Manipur Domestic Workers’ Movement Orgnisation, MDWMO and the Social Work Department of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, IGNTU organized a joint campaign today on Domestic Workers’ Right, DWR through the medium of street plays enacted at several locations in the state capital.

    Street plays based on the rights, justice and dignity of domestic workers were demonstrated at the Manipur Press Club, Konung Mamang and Khongnang Ani karak.

    The campaign was launched at the Manipur Press Club by Manipur Press Club, secretary W Dhamendra Singh. 

    State coordinator of MDWMO Sr Maria Goretti said that there are more than 10,000 domestic workers in Manipur and MDWMO is working in their support and their rights.

    She said that the organization is exclusively working to promote and protect the rights of Domestic workers’ right in Manipur.

    “The immediate focus of the Domestic Workers Right Campaign, DWRC is a National Legislation. The absence of any social and legal protection has led to severe forms of massive exploitation of women and children domestic workers which is gross violation of human rights”.

    “The issue of exploitation of women and children who comprised 95% of domestic workers is frequent and often goes unreported”, she said before adding, “And with no rights and law or rules to fall back on, most of the domestic workers become contemporary slaves”.

    Meanwhile, the MDWMO team also interacted with the public and spread awareness on the issue of domestic workers by distributing pamphlets.
