Manipur: Most extravagant panchayat polls

Manipur, IMPHAL, August 27: “Campaigning for the upcoming Panchayat election has become the most extravagant and expensive in the state since Independence”, said Manipur State Council, CPI secretary, Dr M Nara Singh today during a press conference.

The Manipur State Council, Communist Party of India conveyed a press conference at the Irawat Bhawan complex, BT Road today on the present exodus of NE students from various cities including Bangalore and on the Panchayat Election in the state.

Speaking to media persons, the secretary said the centre needs to have a clear cut policy on the issue of migrants in the region and call for an all political party meeting at the earliest.

He further continued that the CPI will discuss the matter in its national council meeting to be held on September 5-7 at New Delhi.

The CPI, Manipur State Council had also blamed the Centre’s and the Assam government’s lackadaisical attitude towards the Assam issue.

Coming back to the Panchayati election issue, the secretary said that the party is very much worried about the future of the state considering the present electoral system of the Panchayati Raj Institution.

He declared that the present electoral system of the grassroot level governance is not anymore democratically genuine and has turn into “an open voter auction mela”.

He continued that the basic political philosophy of society building is getting lost and the present system has paved way for more corruption, cheating and looting of public money.

He further appealed to the people not to give in to such malpractices but to realise the values of democracy in the true sense.
