Women bodies ban Miss Manipur

IMPHAL, October 26: Sixteen women’s civil organizations of the state have jointly announced a ban on Miss Manipur contest or any other beauty contest organized in relation with cultural festival in the state, saying that organizing such beauty contest has no meaning in the Manipur’s present context.

Spokesperson of the sixteen women’s bodies and president of WACAK,  Ibetombi, speaking with media persons at Manipur Press Club today, said that even though beauty contests are organized in the name of “World Peace” and so on, but it does not really serve the purpose.

She further said that the outfits worn during the beauty contest invokes indecency and as well as it does not suit our Manipuri culture.

After considering the harm it could bring in our society, we (the sixteen women’s organizations) have decided to ban Miss Manipur contest and other district level beauty contests organized in relation with cultural festival from being held in the state, she said.

Charging the Nup-Sabi designers from designing indecent and vulgar outfits, she said that the women organizations will start looking into the matter also.

She also said that now-a-days, people have given so much importance in these beauty contests organised in relation with the festival that, in the end the main objective of organising the festival will be forgotten.     

The sixteen women organizations are Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Lup, AMKIL, CHITUA, WACAK, KANGLAMEI, AMAWOVA, KANGLEICHALL, EECHAL, CLK, Kanglei Women Society, KWWA, NYLAK, Nupi Samaj, Tammi Chingmi Nupi Lup, Meekhol and Macha Leima.
