IMPHAL, April 30: The Civil Society Coalition on Human Right in Manipur and the UN today demanded implementation of the UN recommendation to India made by the United Nations Special Rapporteur Rashida Manjoo on April 1, 2014 at UN General Assembly of Human Right Council twenty-sixth session.
In a press meet convened at the Manipur Press Club Imphal, spokesperson N Pamei deputy director CORE said that the United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, Rashida Manjoo as a part of her visit in India on April 22 to May 1, 2013, arrived at Imphal on April 28, 2013 and interacted with Manipur women who aired their grievances in insurgency prone state.
on April 1, 2014 she submitted a final report after having examined violence against women in the country, including root cause and consequences, and the implication of such violence on the effective exercise of human right by women. Besides, discussed the state`s response and provides recommendation at the UN general Assembly.
Pamei revealed that some of her (Special Rapporteur) was related with state and recommendation to the Indian government the need to repeal the Armed forces special power act 1958 and Armed Forces (J&K) Special power act from the J&K and Northeast region of India and ensure that criminal prosecution of members of the armed forces is free from legal barriers.
In response to her recommendation the government of India has
recognised the need to address violence against women as a human right violation and also as an issue that detracts from the country`s path to prosperity and inclusive developments.
Joy Chingakham of FREINDS, termed the recommendation is the first step to success for Manipur human rights apex body adding that it more importantly highlighted to the whole world that in a largest democracy country like India such inhuman and draconian law existed.
Phunindro Konsam another member of FREINDS, considered the recommendation of Reshida Manjoo good samaritan for the Manipuri especially the women with the violence against women is meted out under the guise of AFSPA.
As an active member of the UN Indian government also received the recommendation copy, said Konsam adding that he contended that despite having received similar recommendation by other Rapporteur the Indian Government continued to playing delaying tactics in responding to it.
If the Indian government neglect the recommendation our next step is that the Civil Society Collision on Human Right in Manipur and the UN, will conduct various seminars on the recommendation, public discussion with intellectual and will pressure the Indian government for implement the recommendation and repeal of AFSPA from the state said Phunindra Konsam.
