Kim Gangte resigns; Joykishan elected new State president of Trinamool Congress

IMPHAL, May 21: The All India Trinamool Congress, Manipur Unit today elected Khumukcham Joykishan as its new president following Kim Gangte’s resignation.

This was announced by party spokesperson, Shivdutta during a press conference. He said fresh election to the party’s top post was held after president Kim Gangte tendered her resignation letter to the party high command through an e-mail.

Kim Gangte’s resignation is presumed to be a direct repercussion to the party’s defeat in the just concluded LS polls.

She had contested the LS poll on party ticket from the Manipur Outer Parliamentary Constituency, but was defeated by a huge margin.

Khumukcham Joykishan who is the sitting MLA of Thangmeiband A/C was supported by 20 executive members of the party including the incumbent president out of 25 members, he said.

Playing down speculations of the party merging with the BJP post-election in the state, the spokesperson declared the party has not taken any decision to this effect, nor has the party received any invitation from any political party.

Acknowledging that communication gaps in the party, he said the new president will fill up the void.

The party will also reach out to the public, he observed.

Andro MLA, Th Shyamkumar said, the party has already submitted information regarding the election to the party high command.

He acknowledged the party’s defeat in the LS polls was due to some misunderstanding inside the party coupled with communication gap.

The new president will lead the party to clear all gaps between the party and the people, he said.

“This new face of Trinamool Congress will be more effective in the upcoming elections,” he assured.

The party has won more than 30 seats in the LS polls, and will be in the opposition. Now any issue of the State will be raised in the Parliament through them, he said.
