MLA inspects Bijoy Govinda Thangapat

IMPHAL, May 2: MLA RK Imo Singh has today inspected the water condition of the Sagolband Bijoy Govinda Thangapat in view of the water scarcity issue in the state.

Speaking to media persons, the MLA stated that Thangapat is an important source of water in and around Sagolband area and moreover it is occupies a place in the history of the state.

Water has been pumped from the Nambul River into the water body since the last five-six days, he said.

Even though it is clear that the water impurity is caused by the algae present in the water, the reason for the presence of the algae is yet to be established, he continued.

The construction of retaining wall around the Thangapat amounted to Rs 6.5 crore but it has only made the water impure, a local lamented.

Before the construction of the wall, the water was always clean and clear, he said.

He further expressed apprehension as to whether the construction of the wall was defective or the engineers had not properly discussed before the construction, although the authorities concerned had announced that the construction of the wall will not affect the water.

He further appealed to the authorities concerned to take necessary actions to make the water potable once again.

RK Imo observed that people throw garbage into the Nambul River, contaminating its water.

He appealed to the people to incorporate some civic sense and be economical in using water.

Meanwhile, the MLA also provided some bags of alum, bleaching powder and limestone for the purification of water.
