IMPHAL, October 5: Reformation of electoral system in India is the need of the hour, stated Dr Moirangthem Nara, National co-ordinator ( Northeastern States) of the Campaign for Electoral Reforms in India at the Manipur Press Club here today.

India has inherited the First Past The Post system also known as simple majority voting as an electoral legacy from the British and is holding on to it despite the fact that the ground realities in India have drastically changed and the country is badly in need of a more relevant electoral system, he added.

Dr Nara said that continuing with FPTP would only extend a politics of exclusion of many sections of Indian people.

`So, CERI is spearheading a campaign in the country for proportionate representation system in order to enhance the inclusive character of Indian democracy and governance. Participation of citizens in the instruments and mechanism of governance at all level is necessary in order to safeguard the democratic fabric of the Indian Nation. Such participation in decision making should ensure proportional democratic space for all people so that no one group become the absolute owner of material and the root cause of corruption also can be rooted out if there is reformation in the election system,` he added.

Dr Nara appealed all the people of the State to participate in the CERI Day which will be observed on October 10 in the Shumang Leela Shangleng at 2 pm.

CERI is a collective of people from different areas of social political engagements, intellectuals, academicians to stand for a shift in the present system of electoral polity, he added.
