IED explosion injures 21-years-old civilian

IMPHAL, December 11: A civilian was injured when a moderately powerful Improvised Explosive Device exploded at the roadside of the diversion to ITI Phaknung along the Imphal-Ukhrul road near the Sawombung Bridge under Lamlai Police this early morning around 7:30.

The injured identified as Moirangthem Sanyai Singh, 21, son of M Sunder Singh was hit by splinters.

Later, bomb experts, who arrived at the scene along with a police team led by an additional SP, examined the bomb splinters and confirmed the explosives used in the explosion to be an IED and that a remote control device was used.

The bomb was planted in a bush along the roadside. The explosion left a half foot deep crater at the roadside.

Meanwhile, the police team also conducted a search in the area using metal detectors.

According to the Lamlai Police Station OC inspector Devkumar Singh, the injured civilian was driving towards Babupara in a Pleasure scooter when he was hit by splinters. He has been hit on his left forehead and left abdomen but has been discharged after receiving first-aid at the Sawombung PHC, the OC said.

The police also suspect that the IED was aimed at the ROP teams of the 30 Assam Rifles, Chingarel or the 49 BSF E Company who pass along the route every day. Meanwhile, officers of the AR and the BSF also arrived at the spot.
