BISHNUPUR, January 4: The morning earthquake has also caused devastation in different parts of Bishnupur district with collapse of pillars at six of the 20 Bishnupur Market Sheds and plasters of its RC roofing.

The magnitude of the earthquake was so high that it led to appearance of cracks on the beams of the market pillars. An official team including Vice-Chairperson of Bishnupur Municipal Council Angan Golmei paid an inspection visit to the market sheds to assess the loss incurred in the earthquake.

The team also made necessary preparation to construct temporary sheds for the vendors. Talking to this correspondent, several elderly persons who were present at the market sheds said that Bishnupur Market Shed was constructed by PDA in 1985.They pointed out that rings of 9-12 inches were used in the construction of the beam pillars instead of 6-8 inches.

According to them, devastation caused to the market shed is due to the lack of quality control in its construction. A building constructed in the southern part of Bethel English School, Nambol also caved in, damaging a Hyundai Eon and Ford car parked under the building. However, there is no news of severe casualties in the reported incidents.
