IMPHAL, Jun 11: Chingmeirong Maning Leikai Shinglup conducted a one day awareness programme on the law on Pre-Conception and the Pre Natal Diagnosis Test (PC and PNDT) Act for protection of ‘female child’ at Sinam Shyama Devi Town Hall under the aegis of Directorate of Family Welfare Dept.
Director of Family Welfare Dept Dr K Rajo was the chief guest while Dr Th Arun was the resource person. Dr S Rajendra delivered the key note address.
Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC and PNDT) Act, 1994 is an Act of the Parliament of India enacted to stop female foeticide and arrest the declining sex ratio in India. The Act banned prenatal sex determination.
Under the PC and PNDT Act there should be compulsory registration of all diagnostic laboratories, all genetic counselling centres, genetic laboratories, genetic clinics and ultrasound clinics, but unfortunately there are less number of registered ultrasound machines in the State, stated K Rajo who also spoke on the salient features of PC and PNDT Act.
It is high time for the authorities concerned to keep a tab of unregistered ultrasound clinics and ban them.
Public play an important role in bringing a balance between male and female in our society and added that without women, there cannot be developed society. “To change the mindset of the society and traditional beliefs of gender preferences, such awareness programme should be encouraged,” he added
Citing examples of women who have excelled in various fields, he added that the society should never neglect the role played by women in bringing a change and development.
He further urged the people to extend their help in bringing gender equality in the society.
