Indefinite bandh cripples transport system

E-Front-__-Bandh-735x400IMPHAL, Aug 24: The indefinite State-wide bandh imposed by the All Manipur DPC Completed Candidates of Police Constable (Male) 2013 since Aug 23 midnight paralysed all forms of transport systems in the State.
It is reported that around 20 vehicles were vandalised by bandh/blockade supporters at Kangpokpi this evening.
Bandh supporters blocked all forms of transportation causing serious inconveniences to commuters in different parts of Imphal city and other district headquarters. Bandh enforcers burnt tyres in the middle of roads, placed logs and vandalized vehicles that violated the indefinite bandh which was enforced widely.
All inter-district passenger services remained off the road though a few private vehicles on emergency services and religious activities were seen. Business establishments, shops, oil pumps and cinema halls in and around Imphal city remained shut.
Khwairamband Bazar wore a deserted look with few passers-by. Schools and colleges, offices and movie theatres remained closed although few office goers were seen as many employees were seen stranded in different areas due to the bandh.
In Sekmai, bandh supporters blocked the National Highway by placing huge boulders of rocks prohibiting any form of vehicular movement. Bandh enforcers blocked the road at Khonghampat area too. But later in the evening, a large number of police personnel chased away the bandh supporters and escorted inter-State passenger vehicles and trucks.
In Khurai Tinsid Road, bandh enforcers took to the street and blocked all forms of vehicular movement by burning tyres and placing wooden logs.
It was reported that two bandh supporters who were endorsing the indefinite bandh were arrested by police personnel at Singjamei. While at Lamlai, twenty of the bandh supporters were reported to have been arrested.
In different areas of Mayai Lambi including Mongsangei, Langthabal, Shamurou, Mayang Imphal and other areas, bandh supporters were seen blocking all forms of transportation.
At Irilbung, Yairipok, Thoubal, Kakching, Mayang Imphal and Bishnupur bandh supporters took to the streets to enforce the bandh.
It was also reported that in Khumbong area, bandh supporters even stopped AR vehicles that were travelling to their camp at Keithelmanbi.
In Sadar Hills area, bandh supporters also showed their support to the ongoing indefinite bandh imposed in the State by blocking vehicular movement in various areas. In Koite Cemetery area of Churachandpur, bandh supporters damaged one diesel auto but they were chased away by police later in the afternoon.
Commercial and passenger vehicles stayed off roads.
Chandel : Vehicular movement along the Imphal- Moreh Highway was paralysed owing to the State wide indefinite bandh called by the JAC of All Manipur Written Test Successful Candidates of Police Constable Male 2013, our correspondent reports.
The bandh supporters enforced the indefinite bandh along the Imphal-Moreh section of the National Highway at Saivom village and Chamol village and prohibited vehicular movement along the road stretch since early this morning.
Many vehicles were stranded near Chamol and Saivom as they were prohibited from proceeding further by bandh enforcers.
No untoward incident has been reported till the time of filing this report.
Thoubal : The JAC’s indefinite bandh largely  affected life at Thoubal district today.
Bandh enforcers blocked roads at Yairipok, Khangabok, Leishangthem, Thoudam Haokha Kiyam and Thoubal Okram.
Police fired tear gas shells at Thoubal Kiyam Khong Ahanbi to disperse protesters who tried to block the National Highway.
Shops, markets, schools, offices and other establishments under the district remained closed for the day. Vehicles also stayed off the road during the general strike, our correspondent reports.
