rssGUWAHATI: Rastriya Sayamsevak Sangh (RSS) will organise largest ever gathering of cadres in Northeast on January 21 and 22. Sarsanghchalak of RSS Mohan Bhagwat will attend the meeting in Guwahati.

Around 40,000 swayam sevaks will coverage in Guwahati on January 21 at Luit Poriya Hindu Samavesh. The meeting will be attended by religious leaders and tribal kings.

Assam Prachar Pramukh Shankar Das told ET, “This will be the largest gathering of swayam sevaks in Northeast. We had a big gathering in 1994 when 4,000 swayamsevaks gathered in the north-east.”

RSS which has made substantial inroads in the Northeast India however has been maintaining low profile all these years. The event is seen as the sign of strength.

Das said, “The event is planned to bring the swayamsevaks together. When the volunteers will see each other there will be a greater degree of cohesion and discipline among the volunteers.” He further said, “On January 22, Sangh will have its meeting. Satradhikars (heads) of satras (vashnavite monastery), religious leaders and about 20 tribal kings will attend the meeting on January 21.”

Bhagwat will meet with the functionaries of RSS’ North east region. A RSS leader, who do not want to be named said, “The meeting will also prepareroad map for expansion of RSS footprint in the region.”

Political analyst opined that this event is crucial for three state including Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland are going to polls early this year. “While in Nagaland BJP is the part of the government, in Christianity dominated Meghalaya BJP is fast emerging as a challenger to 15 year Congress rule.”

Analyst added,” In Left front ruled Tripura, RSS has substantial base in the tribal areas. BJP has built up strong organisational base. Sangha affiliated organisation is working in heathcare and education sector in the state.”
