IMPHAL, Jan 10: A 55 year old woman was allegedly assaulted by a Congress candidate and his workers on the street of Wangoi Bazaar, in broad day light of January 8 morning in connection with the just concluded civic polls of Nagar Pachayat and Municipality Council.
The victim has been identified to be one Thounaojam (O) Punimashi, 55, w/o (L) Th. Dinakumar of Wangoi Thounaojam Mamang Leikai. While the accused is identified is identified as one K. Robindro of the same locality, a candidate of the Wangoi Nagar Panchayat ward No. 5).
A JAC formed against the incident during a press meet held today decried the failure of the police to take action against the accused despite a formal complaint having been lodged at the concerned Wangoi Police Station.
It has further urged the concerned authority to act at the earliest failing which it has warned of stern agitation.
While narrating the incident the spokesperson of the JAC, W. Shyam, claimed that the on January 8 morning around 11, on the day of the declaration of the election result of the area, K. Robindro and his workers dragged Punimashi from her residence by her hair and later dragged her upto Wangoi Bazaar and mercilessly assaulted the woman with their footwear.
The JAC spokesmen further asserted that the victim was assaulted on charges that she was behind Robindro’s lost in the election for Purnimashi had cast a black magic on the flag of the congress party.
W. Shyam clarified that the victim was an innocent person and had nothing to do with the election. He added that Purnimashi was blamed as family members of Robindro who is neigbours with Purnimashi, saw her picked a party flag which was lying in her courtyard and take it inside her room on which she cast her black magic, which resulted in the lost of Robindro a congress candidate in the election.
Condemning the incident the JAC further claimed that the act amounts to disrespect of women folk and violence against women. The victim who is a widow live along with her two children and the accused is taking chance of her helplessness, added the JAC.
The JAC also further condemned the incompetence of the Police for their failure to act despite a compliant being filed against the incident and further urged the concerned authority to book and punish the culprit involved at the earliest.
