DeerImphal: Villagers of Tejpur Awang Leikai in Manipur’s Thoubal district rescued a barking deer from armed hunters on Wednesday.

The male deer had sustained wounds on its limbs after being chased by 20 armed hunters accompanied by hunting dogs. It is believed to have been chased out of a heavily-forested tribal village in Chandel district and reached Tejpur village on Wednesday afternoon.
Two children – Koijam Ranakanta and Nongthombam Rohit – of Tejpur caught the animal and saved it from the hunters. The armed hunters asked the children to hand over the animal but they resisted.
Police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. A team of People For Animals (PFA), Manipur, administered first-aid to the injured deer. It was then taken to the isolation unit of Manipur Zoological Garden in Imphal.

“After it recovers, we will release the deer in the jungle,” managing trustee of PFA, Manipur, L Biswajeet Meitei said on Thursday.
